House of the Vestals, Rome
Free UK delivery included
One of six etching prints inspired by visits to Venice and Rome in the 1980s to 2000s.
Four weathered marble statues of Vestal priestesses stand among the ruins of the House of the Vestals, their draped, headless forms rendered in cool white against the warm ochre and burnt-orange tones of ancient brick and stone behind. These figures honour the priestesses who tended the sacred, eternal flame in the adjoining Temple of Vesta, Goddess of the Hearth. Situated in the shadow of the Palatine Hill, this was among the most sacred and closely guarded grounds in ancient Rome. Fine linework builds the texture of broken masonry, while broad passages of colour give the composition its atmospheric depth.
Printed on textured German Etching paper to preserve the authentic character of the original plate. Unframed, with white border.
Framed prints are available on request. Please get in touch.
